UNP, IPB and BMKG held a National Seminar on the Application of Climatology in Various Scientific Fields
Universitas
Negeri Padang, through the Department of Physics FMIPA UNP and the Research
Center for Climate Change (RCCC) in collaboration with the Department of
Meteorology and Geophysics FMIPA IBP University invited the Meteorology,
Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) to hold a National Seminar entitled
"Application of Climatology in Various Fields Science”.
The one day seminar held at the Ibis Hotel on Tuesday, December 5th 2023 in Padang, was attended by Undergraduate and Postgraduate students from UNP and IPB University, GAW (Global Atmosphere Watch) Bukit Kototabang, FMIPA Unand students, and Climatology practitioners from BMKG West Sumatra.
This seminar aims to promote dialogue and discussion on the application of climate science to various sectors. It is hoped that the output of this seminar can contribute to the initiation of research collaboration between IPB and UNP researchers. This seminar is also a part of the Educational Collaboration between IPB and BMKG which has been going on for more than 10 years.
This seminar was held in a triangle collaboration for the first time by these three prestigious institutions. There were 3 parallel sessions. The keynote speaker was from the Central BMKG, Dr. R. Mulyono Prabowo. Meanwhile, the four invited speakers were Asben Hendri, S.E., M.M (Head of the West Sumatra Environmental Service), Prof. Dr. Yonny Koesmaryono (IPB University), Prof. Yohandri, M.Si, Ph,D from FMIPA UNP, and Dr. Sugeng Nugroho as Head of GAW Bukit Kototabang Station, Agam.
According to Dr. Nofi Yendri Sudiar, S.Si, M.Si, MCE, as Head of RCCC, this activity needs to be appreciated positively, not only by RCCC and FMIPA UNP but also the academic community of Universitas Negeri Padang, especially those who have an interest in climatology studies. "Considering on the extreme climate changes that are increasingly occurring, it is urgent to study climatology massively so that global citizens are prepared and able to find various mitigation solutions."
Meanwhile, the Dean of FMIPA UNP, Dr. Yulkifli, S.Pd., M.Si in his welcoming speech emphasized the importance of the development natural science as part of the civilization locomotive. “If scientists no longer want to collaborate to study natural phenomena, civilization will be on the verge to collapse. "Moreover, climate change can be a threat and an opportunity for future research exploration."
In this full day activity, 18 research results from two campuses, UNP and IPB, were presented. 13 of them were the result of research from IPB postgraduate students, both Masters and Doctoral. Meanwhile, the other 5 were the results of research by undergraduate and master's students at the Department of Physics, FMIPA UNP. [MIG]
