After going through a long debate, the findings of research data on the Anniversary of UNP finally come to the results. Prof. Dr. Mestika Zed, a lecturer and researcher from the Center for Socio-Cultural and Economic Studies (PKSBE) of the Faculty of Social Sciences of Universitas Negeri Padang (UNP), delivered it on his scientific speech in the topic of the Role of Teacher Education in Educating National Life. The inauguration of the commemoration of the anniversary of UNP which the previous years were commemorated on 1 September, in the coming years will be commemorated on every 23 October.

Prof. Mestika Zed said that most students nowadays no longer know about history even though it is really important. We need to know the history if we want to know who we are and what we must do in the future. So, knowing the date anniversary of UNP is really precious to us because we can know UNP very well including the vision, mission, and action that must take on the future of UNP.

"UNP must keep focused on the field of teacher training with strengthens the academic and field of expertise" Prof. Dr. Mestika Zed said. He also proposed that the statute of UNP needed to be revised. Currently, UNP is moving from Teaching University to Research University.

Teacher Education Colleges (PTPG) is the oldest university in West Sumatera province. The first batch of PTPG itself was previously exposed to prospective students, but only 125 people succeeded to enter.

Furthermore, Prof. Ganefri revealed that the stipulation on October 23 had historical significance as the initial momentum of UNP's existence which at first was known to be a college called Teacher Education College (PTPG) in Batusangkar established based on the Decree of the Minister of PP & K Number 35693 about the Establishment of Teacher Education College in Batusangkar, on August 16, 1954.

Prof. Ganefri Ph.D. explained that the journey of the existence of UNP as one of the universities resulting from the policy of expanding of the mandate (wider mandate) of the Teacher Training and Education Sciences (IKIP) throughout Indonesia, has gained various successes which not apart from the dedication and professional work of all of academic community, founders, and predecessors of UNP.
