Universitas Negeri Padang (UNP) in collaboration with the Government of Muaro Paneh, Bukit Sundi District, Solok Regency, applies science to create green and independent villages, especially on producing Micro Hydro and Solar Cells to improve irrigation systems. The coordinator of the Department of Physics of FMIPA UNP in Muaro Paneh, Dr. Hamdi said that the counsellor of Muaro Paneh community in order in making Hydroelectric Power Plant had been pursued so that the Muaro Paneh later can become the future of Nagara in Solok Regency. "The socialization to be Green Village or Mandiri Village, including community coaching in making Micro Hydro Hydroelectric Power Plants and in making ponds from the Batang Lembang’s river as a source of water already have done by us," Dr. Hamdi said on Tuesday (October 16).

According to him, in order to make Micro Hydro Hydroelectric Power Plants, the team service was conducted from the beginning of June. The team members, namely Dr. Ramli, Dr. Sukardi, Dr. Yulhendri, Syafriani Ph.D., made a presentation and discussion about renewable energy sources that can be utilized in the long term of daily life. The problem of the Muaro Paneh village as stated by Dr. Ramli is the non-functioning of the village resources in the form of a waterwheel which utilizes the kinetic energy of water and the number of paddy fields that are less productive due to the location of rice fields that far enough from the water source and the irrigation malfunctioning.

In addition, Dr. Hamdi revealed that the number of cages in the Batang Lembang’s river can pollute the water which can eventually cause overall harm to the community in the Batang Lembang watershed. "The solution is reactivated the irrigation in Muaro Paneh village. With the good irrigation, waterwheel, rice fields, and ponds which were reactivated, the water needed can fill up. Rice fields and fish ponds can be more productive. We can make micro-hydro then as a renewable energy source," Ramli said.

Meanwhile, Dr. Yulhendri added that the presence of Micro Hydro Hydroelectric Power Plant in Muaro Paneh village would be able to increase the income and welfare of the community. Besides of that it will reduce water pollution in the river so that the people of Muaro Paneh can live healthier. Furthermore, Muaro Paneh village will be prepared to become a village that is independent of energy which has water tourism destinations and heritage of the waterwheel culture with agricultural and catfish sub-businesses. "If this activity works well, the source of income for the people of Muaro Paneh village can be increased and the welfare of the people can also be increased," he said.
